Dr. Bernie Unrau

Dr Bernie Unrau DDS overcame much adversity and plight. After accidently stumbling across an article in a 1985 CDA (Canadian Dental Association) Journal entitled "Dentists as Detectives" and a 4 minute video by the prolific Robin Cook MD back in 1989 about how he wrote his bestselling books usually in 6 weeks each summer, Bernie declared, "by God I can do that!" His lengthy medical and dental education - ADA (American Dental Association) # 122693972 - 4 US curricula, 9 US Board Exams including 3 post doc - Implantology, Cosmetic Dentistry and Oral Medicine/ Pharmacology, the Kenneth D. Rudd Continuing Dental Education Award from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio depleted his resources. 10 years of clinic experience - Impladent Inc., 10,000 procedures, essentially working for free. He published several medical dental papers and held memberships in the American Student Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, Academy for Sports Dentistry, American Academy of Oral Pharmacology, American Academy of Implant Dentistry, International Congress of Oral Implantology, Institute for Laser Dentistry, University Aviation Association - both fixed wing & helicopter. As they say: "necessity is the mother of invention", his sheer persistence, determination and ingenuity led to 4 "Gumtex" dental surgical patents. They sold like hotcakes via peer reviewed presentations and table clinics like book signings and ultimately went to 40+ countries to train 4000+ dentists, students, profs and paid for his entire medical, dental, graduate studies and clinic via instrument awards, etc. Such a simple $10 idea!   He acquired the nickname "Dr Gum" from these endeavors who became the central character in his harrowing tales. Whether part bumbling lieutenant Columbo, the crafty detective Sherlock Holmes created by Sir Conan Doyle also a physician; the determination of Dr Jack Ryan Tom Clancy's creation; the in depth research of Michael Crichton's science fiction action adventures or the chilling concepts of John Grisham's legalistic thrillers. Many of his suspense filled stories were inspired by his travels and personal experiences. Whether unravelling nuclear threats, on the trail of bioterrorism or caught in the middle of natural and unnatural disasters; uncovering a dastardly scheme or deadly dilemma; dealing with plaguing problems and possible impending global pandemics; bringing a new medical breakthrough or the latest leading edge technology to light; chasing a famous art forgery or finding the answers to a frightening futuristic fiasco, Bernie brings these issues to light in a highly imaginative way. His science fiction stories read like science fact, several of which are in discussions to be made into movies!  He plans to pen many more books like the prolific Zane Grey, turn of the century dentist turned novelist turned screenwriter who went on to pen 100 books which became 100 films, westerns, before Clint Eastwood's. A set of Bernie's books are next to Zane's in the American Dental Association Library Archives in Chicago. His mission is to place many more millions of smiles on people's faces around the globe then he ever could practicing dentistry. Bernie has enjoyed travel, tennis, sailing, skiing, hiking, flying, reading and thinking. Still single, he currently resides in Calgary.
