$12.50

This book is a collection of original poems and illustrations by Sister Joan Pitlyk and Brenda Pitlyk Howsmon. Their book combines playful rhyming verses with whimsical pictures that bring magic into the lives of little children. A lonely dinosaur, a funny clown, a dancing kite, a talking giraffe and other make-believe characters in a child’s world come to life on the pages of this book.

Brenda’s illustrations are a method of art called “painting with paper.”  She rips pieces of paper and makes a collage with the different patterns, textures and colored paper.  With texture and mixed media applied, the result is a beautiful illustration capturing the words of the poem and engaging the child’s imagination into the world of make-believe.

This book is not just for young children in the primary grades. It is also a book for toddlers and it is a beautiful way for parents to read to their little children and to introduce them to the wonderful make-believe world. It is a book that will have them laughing and clapping and it is a book that will win their hearts.

Sister Joan Pitlyk CSJ: Illustrator Brenda Pitlyk Howsmon

Sister Joan Pitlyk CSJ and Brenda Pitlyk Howsmon Brenda and Sister Joan live in St. Louis, MO. Brenda has a full-time job at Washington University where she works with computers, solves problems and analyzes processes. Sister Joan is a retired teacher who enjoys spending her leisure time reading and doing some creative writing. Although The Rabbit Who Nibbled and Other Poems is their first book of children’s poems, Brenda and Sister Joan have often entertained their family and friends with stories and pictures of their dogs. When Josh, Brenda’s son, left St. Louis to study Marine Biology in the Virgin Islands, Brenda took over the care of his yellow Lab named Luke. One of her most delightful stories was Luke’s excitement as he anticipated the return of Josh for Christmas vacation. Brenda’s photographs and story showed this adorable dog helping to bake sugar cookies; he was then seen studying a map to locate Josh’s college on St. Thomas Island. Day after day this entertaining yellow Lab brought smiles to the faces of many readers who followed him on his Facebook page. For many years, Sister Joan has written about her dogs Lucky and Freckles and their cousin Lucy. The three dogs have endeared themselves to friends and family as they grew from playful puppies to older dogs who ran for President, wrote Shakespearean sonnets and eventually created havoc in Dog Heaven.
